Description
Brain stroke occurs due to a reduced or blocked blood supply in the brain. In the absence of nutrients and oxygen, brain nerve cells begin to die. Early detection can save lives. The identifying stroke symptoms and signs include difficulty in speaking or understanding others, numbness in the arm, leg, or face, trouble in vision, headache, and loss of balance or coordination. A pneumonic FAST has been introduced for recognizing a person having a stroke and helping them. The words describe the following:
F: Request the person to smile. Is the FACE drooping on one side?
A: Ask the person to raise both ARMS. Are they unable to raise one arm?
S: Is the person’s SPEECH slurred?
T: Don’t waste TIME and call for an ambulance immediately.
